Updated: Feb 22, 2022

Are you looking for a fun fresh new St. Patrick's Day pattern to crochet? This "Pot of Gold Rainbow" applique is a fun, fast, and easy applique to crochet and you can use it in a variety of ways!

I don't know why but St. Patrick's Day is one of my favorite holidays and it has been since I was a kid! Maybe it's my red hair, pale skin, green eyes and this pull in my heart to just pack up and move to Ireland. I feel like it's where I belong (haha)! Who knows? But what I do know is it's just a feel-good holiday to me for some strange reason lol!

Obviously, I did not enjoy the pinching part of the holiday that school-age children did if you forgot to wear green on this day, but I did like everything else. It's strange too because I do not even really remember exactly how we celebrated in school but I do remember vaguely having a party and we didn't have to do any school work - so maybe this is why I love it lol.

Anyways, there are plenty of people like me out there who love this holiday too (and I think for them its the beer more than anything haha) and they would also like a fun new way to spruce up their home with a St. Patty's Day applique! With this applique you can use it on an Irish inspired pillow, blanket, sign, banner or even on a door wreath!

If you enjoy this pattern so much that you would like to have a printable ad-free copy you can grab it from any of my three shops - Orchid and Bee's Shop, Etsy, or Ravelry!

A couple of my pattern testers made really neat door wreaths for their grandmothers in senior assisted living homes. One of the testers, Siccily Burrows, had her husband use wire cutters to clip a metal wreath to match the shape of the applique perfectly! How clever!

Pattern Tester Cha Coronel also had fun and made her rainbow Candy Land Themed which was one of the crowd favorites in the Orchid and Bee's VIP Group!

Pattern Testers Jessica Whisman and Vannessa Strum showed us what it looks like when you start with opposite colors of the rainbow!

All these look amazing and the testers did a great job didn't they! It's so neat how something so simple can still be customized just by changing up the colors, color order, and piece positions! I bet you are ready to give this pattern a go now! So here you go!

Assembly

  • Note: I assemble my appliques with hot glue which is a fast and safe method. The glue adheres to the fibers quite well and the applique is very secure. The hot glue packaging that I use says non-toxic so it is safe in my opinion. In addition, you can machine wash on cold, and lay flat to dry or tumble dry/lowest heat setting. You may also use other fabric safe glue or use the traditional method of sewing your pieces together.

How I assemble my Rainbow:

  • I lay out all my pieces to get the look I want first. You can use pins to hold it together if you desire and/or take a picture of your layout with your phone to reference as you are putting it together.

  • First I sewed my clover petals sides together and closed the center with my yarn and needle. Then I attached the stem to the back with hot glue. Note: your petals will not be completely flat, they have some dimension and is meant to be a little lifelike.

  • Next I attached the pot brim to the pot.

  • I attached the clover to the right side of the rainbow and the pot to the left side.

  • Last I attached my coins.

  • Your applique is finished and now to can attach it to your project of choice! If you need a few ideas here are some from Amazon to help spark your imagination - burlap yard sign, wooden pallet sign, mixed media sign for hanging, and more!!! Enjoy!

There are so many great ways to use this applique! I would loooovvveee to see how yours came out and how you used it! This is one of my favorite patterns!
